10 Great Football Duos In Recent Times. Through out the years, football has not only seen stars but groups of players who have managed to make a name for themselves while playing together, below are a few duos who have been spectacular during their time together. All your favorite ones aren’t here, but a good amount of duo partners are listed.
1. XAVI AND INIESTA (BARCELONA AND SPAIN)
The midfield duo were sensational during their stay at Barcelona and Spain. Both graduated from the La Masia academy and broke into the Barcelona first team almost at the same time. The magical central midfielders first played together in 2002 in a 4-0 win against Mallorca, known for their sensational tiki taka style of play, with which they used to hold the Barcelona and Spanish midfield together alongside fellow Barcelona and Spanish teammate,, Sergio Busquet. They played 412 games together for Barcelona and 73 for The Spanish National Team, going on to win 19 trophies together for the Catalan side including 5 LaLiga, 3 Copa del Rey, 4 Spanish Super Cup, 3 Champions League, 2 Uefa Super Cup and 2 Club World Cup. They even won the World Cup with Spain, Iniesta scoring the winning goal.
2. VIDIC AND RIO FERDINAND (MANCHESTER UNITED)
Vidic and Ferdinand were the best defensive duo in Europe between 2007 and 2011. They were the pillar in Sir Alex Ferguson’s defence, winning three trophies in those 4 years including a Champions league trophy. Ferdinand was ball playing center back while Vidic had a reputation for being one of the best tacklers and headers in the game. Even though they failed to win the Champions League twi Barcelona, they still added their parts in making Manchester United a great club.
3. LUKAKU AND MARTINEZ (INTER MILAN)
Just like every other team Conte has been in, he introduced the duo striker partnership, with Icardi’s exit and Lukaku’s entry, Lauturo Martinez and Lukaku played in perfect symbiosis, scoring consistently with Lukaku playing as a target man and Martinez as a second striker. The partnership earned a combined 104 goals in their two season run and they also led Inter Milan to winning the scudetto, stopping Juventus’ 8 years trophy run.
4. LEWANDOWSKI AND MULLER (BAYERN MUNICH)
Lewandowski and Thomas Muller are known to be the next best duo right after Robben and Ribery duo. The duo have provided alot of goals in their time together but Lewandowski happens to be the goal scorer while Muller is the creator even though he scores from Lewandowski every now and then.
The duo have won many trophies together including numerous Bundesliga titles and Champions League trophies. They shared more than 20 goals between themselves last season.
5. CHIELLINI AND BONUCCI (JUVENTUS AND ITALY)
The Italian duo are currently the best defensive duo and have proved it both in the their club and the Italian National Team. Leonardo Bonucci left Juventus for AC Milan in 2008, but luckily, we had the chance of seeing these iconic duo as he came back to Juventus one year late The duo has led Juventus to numerous trophies including the scudetto and we’re among the team that led Italy to Euro 2020.
6. SANCHO AND HAALAND (DORTMUND)
The Sancho – Haaland duo was a combination we hoped to see for a long time but unfortunately, ended earlier than expected due to Sancho’s transfer to Manchester United. The youngsters had a wonderful partnership, with Haaland being the scorer among the both, while Sancho’s sharp dribbling and killer passes paved the way for various goals. Even though Sancho’s form hasn’t been good I’m his new club, he is still a youngster to watch which is showed in his English call up. Haaland on the other hand, has been linked with a move to Manchester City.
7. STONES AND RUBEN DIAS (MANCHESTER CITY)
Even though the duo hasn’t played for long, it has showed potential and performed well beyond doubt. John Stone’s form which was fading reignited following Ruben Diaz’s move to City from Benefica. The Portuguese Center back flowed straight into Pep Guardiola’s team upon coming back, claiming a starting place at the backline of the team. His leadership roles has also gained him the captains armband this season. The duo had the second least goals conceded in last season’s Champions League, reaching the final and winning the English Premier League.

The Ribery and Robben duo partnership happens to be one of the most unusual of dual patnerships in football because unlike most other duos who prefer to be played side by side or before or behind each other, this duo are wingers who play on different sides of the pitch, with Franck Ribery on the left and the left footed dutch disaster, Arjen Robben on the left side with a striker in between. But they happen to be the best wing partners in modern football.
Two years after Ribery’s €25,000,000 move to Bayern Munich, Robben joined the Bavarians. The duo was known for their sharp counter attacking sense, with Marhez skills and Vardy’s speed making them a deadly duo both during Leicester’s time in the Championship and the Premier league alike where VARDY won the golden boot and Mahrez got double figures in both goals and assists, becoming the first African to win the Premier League player of the season. They also won the Premier league in 2016 and showed their will in the Champions League where they endured to the quarter finals being the last English team to leave the tournament. While Mahrez now plays for Manchester City and Vardy for Leicester City, they both sure are a duo remember.
