Academy Disqualifies Nigeria’s Oscar Entry “ Lionheart ”, Genevieve Nnaji Reacts [See Details]. The first Nigerian Film ever to be submitted to the Oscar’s Award had been disqualified.
They said it did not meet with the academy terms for international film feature. They said the film did not contain enough foreign language and that it contained too much English language.
Genevieve has reacted to this on twitter, she said ,
“ It’s no different to how French connects communities in former French colonies. We did not choose who colonized us. As ever, this film and many like it, is proudly Nigerian. @TheAcademy ”
Many other Nigerians have also been reacting to this disqualification.
“ To @TheAcademy, You disqualified Nigeria’s first-ever submission for Best International Feature because its in English. But English is the official language of Nigeria. Are you barring this country from ever competing for an Oscar in its official language? ” Ava said
“ Something about this doesn’t seem fair. The film was disqualified because it’s mostly in English. Meanwhile, the official language of Nigeria is….English. ” Britni Danielle Said
