Omawumi Megbele (born 13 April 1982), known by her stage name Omawumi, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress of Itsekiri ethnicity She is a brand ambassador for Globacom, Konga.com, and Malta Guinness. She’s also part of the campaign called “Rise with the Energy of Africa”. She gained attention as the 2007 runner-up on West African Idols, a reality TV show part of the Idols franchise. Her second album, The Lasso of Truth, was reported to be a commercial success in Nigeria.Omawumi was born to Chief Dr Frank and Mrs Aya Megbele on 13 April 1982. She attended Nana Primary School during her pupilage and later attended the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. She graduated from Ambrose Alli University with a Law degree. After graduating in 2005, she moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she worked with her family’s law firm called “O.S Megbele & Associates”. She also studied French at Alliance Francaise. She married Toyin Yusuf on 13 January 2018.Music careerOmawumi rose to prominence as a contestant on Idols West Africa. Omawumi, with her strong voice and out-going personality, was voted the 1st runner-up of the competition when it ended in May 2007. Since then, she has had numerous performances on the stage with musicians such as P-Square, 2face Idibia, D’Banj, Banky W, M.I, Sasha, 9ice, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone and Donell Jones, Angelique Kidjo, among others.Omawumi?s earliest education was at Nana Primary School. Later she attended College of Education?s Demonstration Secondary School. For her university education, Omawumi, studied law at Ambrose Alli University where she obtained a degree (LL.B) Law, and was eventually called to bar after passing through Nigerian Law School.Omawumi actually came to lime-light in the year 2007, after her participation in Idol West Africa. In the contest, she came out the first runner-up of the competition due to her strong voice. From that time upwards, she have continued to put-up super appearances on stage with names like TuFace, 9ice, Banky W, P-Square etc. Omawumi also features in home video and television concerts as an actress.Omawumi met her hubby, Tosin Ibrahim Yusuf way back in 2010 when he was the co-owner of the popular night club, Zamunda in Victoria Island, Lagos. She had a daughter- Emmanuella Kamillah Yusuf for him at United States on June 18, 2011.However, she got engaged to him in 2014 and they got married at Ikoyi Registry, Lagos State on January 16, 2015. Omawumi became popular as a contestant on Idols West Africa, where she emerged the first runner up of the competition in May 2007. After the competition, she started enjoying the privilege of performing with star musicians like P-Square, 2face Idibia, D’Banj, Banky W, M.I, Sasha, 9ice, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone and Donell Jones, Angelique Kidjo amongst others. Omawumi owns her own record label.Omawumi is a multi-talented artist because she’s not only good at singing, but also a pro actress. She started acting in 2009 when she played a minor role at V-monologues – a play that reflects the negative issues affecting Nigerian women. Afterwards, she starred in the musical play Olorombi, and the movie Inhale, a Hollywood and Nollywood.In 2011, Funke Akindele gave her a lead role in the Return of Jenifa, and in 2013 she starred in Yvonne Nelson’s House of Gold alongside Majid Michael and Ice Prince. Omawumi was one of the lead actors in the movie ‘She Is’ which premiered in March 2019. ‘She Is‘ was produced by Omawumi’s media company; Hermanes Media. The soundtrack of the movie was sung by Omawumi and Waje – her best friend who is also a hot cake in the Nigerian music industry.
